Why are pros changing how they play against the orthodox fuseki? ¶

In the 1990s and most of the 2000s, the usual way for White to play against the orthodox fuseki seems to have been the low wedge in the diagram:
But over the last five or ten years, almost all the pros seem to have abandoned the wedge and moved to approaching the 4-4 on the "inside", as in
What's the reasoning behind this shift to make it seem so decisive?
