Rukis: I am about 1d-3d on KGS, my rank varies.

So I know this question has been asked thousands of times however I feel I never got a solid enough answer.

I like studying Honinbo Jowa, Akaboshi Inetsu, Shusaku. All of the older players styles, great games to learn from.

However I always get someone stronger than me telling me that learning playing style before komi would be too slow. Is that necessarily true?

I understand in modern go the objective is to play fast while taking large points/territory on the board. Looking at the before komi styles, It just seems that the roles are reversed. Black has to play like white in a no komi game.
