Question about preventing double-wing formation

Question about preventing double-wing formation

  By: Farodin on April 14, 2017, 9:04 a.m.

Greetings!

I just played a game on Tygem as an 8kyu, and I had a question about an invasion into my opponent's corner. The game is here: I play white, and my question is at move 30. Was this move correct globally (right direction of play) and what would have been the best "joseki" to choose here? I feel like the result gave black a huge moyo.

If there are any other general tips throughout the game, I'd be happy to receive them, but my main question is just about move 30.

Thanks in advance, Gints

Hello,

The move would have been correct if you hadn't better to do: attacking a weak opponent group thanks to the thickness Black gave to you on the right side at R10. It's always better to attack a weak group of the opponent and build territory from it because he spent some moves around so if he doesn't defend it would have been a waste of moves. So It's kind of sente here and you still can invade or reduce the formation later with a shoulder hit at J16.

Moreover, approaching the formation so low could enable Black to attack severly your stone with a kosumi-tsuke at D17 so I would rather play on the 4th line at E16 for White.

Thank you very much for your reply.

It's good to know that my strategic priorities were wrong, and that I should try to give priority to attacking my opponent's weak groups in my games. It's some very valuable advice. And thank you as well for the tactical approach when I do want to reduce my opponent later.

Kind regards, Farodin
