League structure

League structure

  By: climu on Feb. 23, 2017, 12:17 p.m.

Hi, For now we have one big division with almost 50 players. My idea was to keep one big division for february ( one week left) and start real league in March.

What kind of league would you like ?

For now we have 9 players who played a game.

Maybe we do 2 divisions next month: 1 for active players of this month and one for newcomers.

Then we can promote/demote at the end of each month.

Feel free to share ideas/thought on how you would like the league to be structure here.

The obvious way to separate leagues would be DDK, SDK and Dan. Though, whether this really leaves enough people per group depends on the distribution of ranks.

Hi, Thanks for sharing your thought on our league structure.

Having differents leagues for DDK, SDK and dans is indeed an idea that would create a more competitive league.

I see 3 issue about it thought:

  • What about users who are not ranked ?
  • That means less teaching games.
  • What if a kyu player get in top of his class due to strong activity. That kinda break this rank sorting.

Activity is important:

The league can work only if players play games. That's why I think it's important to encourage players to play a lot. If players play a lot, it will be easyer to find games and the league will be working.

By experience, we will have lots of player registrated, but let say 50% actually playing games.

Right now our league reward activity as well as winning (see point per win/loss discussion). Also, I plan to drop out all players that didn't play a minimum number of games during a month (1 for now). Such players will of course be able to rejoin the league anytime, but starting from bottom.

Rewarding activity not only encourage players to play a lot but it also means that a kyu player very active in the league could go up the ladder to the very top class. Doing so he would enjoy some prizes and basicly all his leagues games will be teaching games with review by stronger players. That way, the top class would be the class with both the strongers and the more active players and our DDK won't be discourages by staying at the bottom all time.

I can't hide that's my experience in ASR speaking: Some kyu players play a lot and improve faster. Naturally, the top class was mostly compose of strong dans players fighting for the the 1st place but eventually, a kyu can get there if he plays enought and enjoy a crazy month there.

Anyway, for March we have few players still. We will only keep the players who have played at least one game. That leave us around 10 players for the A class and we ll put all news in B class.

Maybe we can do A for february active, B for players stronger than, let say, 3 kyu and C for new players weaker than 3ky. I fear this division could make it harder for newcomers to find games eventually.

Does the way I see things make sense to you ? Maybe I am biased due to my ASR time and you would rather enjoy a different structure ?

So basicly, we have a choice:

Do we want the league to be structured by players rank or not ? Either a strong dan start directly in the top group or he have to climb the ladder as everyone else.

I think I prefer the second presonally (rank doesn't matter and we like teaching games), but I am very open to hear your voices.

Also: At the moment the B group has 40 players and we are just the 07 of the month.

Are we going to split and make a C group during this month ?

If so when/how ?

What I could think of is: If the league keeps filling like that, the 15 we can keep all B players that played a game already in B group and put the others in a new C group.

As usual, feel free to share your thoughts.

April is coming guys and we need to think how we will set up next league. Following suggestions in this thread, groups names will be ponuki, tiger's mouth and empty triangle.

I can suggest the folowing:

We keep all player that played at least 2 games: 3/4 from A group and 20/30 from B group. Other inactive players will get droped from the league. They can rejoin anytime clicling a join button in their profile.

Since A group was quite inactive this month, we keep all active player from A and they are in ponuki. We put the first 8/10 players from B group and send them to ponuki. Other active players from B group are sent to tiger's mouth. Then empty triangle is for newcomers.

What do you think ?

Maybe it's best to have only 2 groups next month ?

Keep it at 2, with the active ones from last month on A, and the others(new ones in the league or demoted guys from A) at B. Also make the registration for the league manual, and not automatic after joining the site.
