You tried to save the upper side group that was very weak. Doing so forced play down to your right side group, weakening it.

Keys here :

1. Avoid weak groups as much as possible - 2 or more will be a bad idea
2. Sacrifice what you cannot save - gain from threats to save
3. Try to step back and see the whole board - how groups relate to each other - as much as possible

Does this make sense?
